A Trade War With U.S. Would Knock Canada's Economy Into Recession: Empty A Trade War With U.S. Would Knock Canada's Economy Into Recession:

A new analysis of escalating trade disputes involving the United States warns that a deterioration into an all-out, global trade war would knock North America's economies into recession.

The report by Scotiabank said if the U.S. breaks all trade ties with its partners — and imposes across-the-board tariffs that average 20 per cent — then Canada and Mexico would see their economies contract in 2020.

For Canada, it predicts the economy would shrink 1.8 per cent.

"A ramp-up in protectionism in the U.S. results in a negative impact on growth in each of the NAFTA partners' economies," said the report, co-authored by Scotiabank's Brett House, Juan Manuel Herrera, Rene Lalonde and Nikita Perevalov.

This worst-case scenario is one of several potential outcomes examined by Scotiabank.

U.S. Aluminum Tariffs Prompt Canned Food Makers To Jack Up Prices

The exact amount by which prices will be increased is still under consideration.

TORONTO — Soup, pop and beer makers can't seem to put a lid on the effects of the recent aluminum tariffs.

The 10 per cent fees that were slapped on imports of the metal by U.S. President Donald Trump in early July are making cans more expensive and forcing food and beverage companies that rely on them for packaging to consider price increases and other ways to offset the costs.

The Campbell Company of Canada, which produces canned soup at its soon-to-close Etobicoke plant, is set to jack up prices in late August on a "broad range of products."

The exact amount by which prices will be increased is still under consideration, but the tariffs combined with raising freight, packaging and ingredient costs are to blame, company spokesperson Alexandra Sockett told The Canadian Press in an email.
